WHAT IS LIFESTYLE MEDICINE?

Lifestyle Medicine is the use of evidence-based lifestyle therapeutic approaches, such as a whole-food, plant-predominant (Does NOT mean vegan or vegetarian) dietary lifestyle, regular physical activity, adequate sleep, stress management, avoiding use of risky substances and pursuing other non-drug modalities, to treat, reverse, and prevent chronic disease.

Lifestyle Medicine is:

Validated as highly effective

Addresses the root-cause of disease

Better outcomes and lower cost …value-based care

Engaging/ affordable / patient-centered / healing

WE NEED LIFESTYLE MEDICINE BECAUSE:

US Healthcare Spend = $3.3 trillion ($10,739 per person)18% of US Gross Domestic Product By 2050 Medicaid and Medicare alone will account for 20% of the GDP

90% of this spend is on chronic disease.

By 2030, the number of people with three or more conditions is expected to increase to 83 million, with a total cost of over $42 trillion.

Employers foot a hefty bill for the cost of disease. Absenteeism because of the top five chronic conditions cost employers a total of $11.2 billion (obesity), $10.3 billion (hypertension) $9.1 billion (physical inactivity), $3.6 billion (current smoking), and $2.2 billion (diabetes)

WHY NOW:

U.S. medical schools provided an average of 19.6 hours of required nutrition teaching. Only 27%provide the minimum 25 hours as recommended by the National Academy of Sciences in 1985.

A survey assessing the basic nutritional knowledge of fourth-year medical/osteopathic school graduates entering a pediatric residency found on average, incoming interns answered 52% of the 18 questions correctly.

Study of 25 family medicine, internal medicine and OB-GYN medical residency programs in Ohio: Programs averaged 2.8 hours of instruction on obesity, nutrition and physical activity counseling. Only 42% taught the residents techniques for how to perform health behavior counseling.

What’s involved in a consultation?

We begin with a 110min (nearly 2 hours) Initial Evaluation session to gather information about your issues of concern, medical history, sleep habits, nutrition intake recalling what you ate previous day, areas of stress, other lifestyle habits including social history. I will also perform a physical observation assessment and assess some global movements to assess physical function. From this intake I will develop a personalized custom plan including recommendations for optimizing each pillar of health: Physical fitness, Nutrition, Sleep, Social Connection, Stress Management, Avoidance or limiting of Harmful substances. This 110min session including an emailed plan of care is priced at $240. Based on what we determine together from this initial session you may be able to go forward independently working on the recommendations, or you may need help and like to book sessions to work on the areas of need be it further nutrition guidance, strength and mobility training to meet your goals, etc. Remember, we get the health we choose, our daily habits are choices even if by default but change is always possible if we decide it’s a priority. We are not our genetics, our genes is the gun, but our LIFESTYLE pulls the trigger.
